O Museu Berardo (imprensa estrangeira)

And what is happening in Lisbon on the art side will also warrant a return there (pieces from the Hermitage, St Petersburg, will be on loan from 2010). Already the Berardo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has opened in Lisbon's Centro Cultural de Belém, named for its benefactor, José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo. Run by Jean-François Chougnet, the museum shows Dali, Lichtenstein, Modigliani, Pollock and Warhol from the 4,000-plus items Berardo collection. Seventh son of a modest Madeira family, left school at 13, immigrated to South Africa at 18 and worked up the gigantic Metalgest mining empire. His wine holdings include Australia's Cumulus Wines (Climbing, Philip Shaw and Rolling Estate); and Portugal's Caves Aliança, Quinta da Bacalhoa; Colio Estate Wines in Canada and, back on Madeira, Henriques & Henriques. On June 15th, he launched a bid for Portugal's football club, Benfica. http://www.metalgest.pt/
